Sandy Kim shot the fashion story for the newest issue of the FADER. It was inspired by Philip Glass’s early years working on advant-garde music in his small Chinatown apartment.

There’s also a behind the scenes video from her shoot.

The issue should be on newsstands now with other rad work from our friend Alex Welsh.

Danilo is supposed to be my neighbor. But he spends more time on airplanes than he does at home. He’s been in China for the last month and recently finished an episode of Picture Perfect about photographer Patrick Brown and his “Animal Trade” project. It’s really fascinating, upsetting, and informative.

If you’ve been following Hamburger Eyes at all for the last year or so, you’d know that they’ve been putting out zines for a bunch of different photographers. Jesse Pollock, the dude behind Unpiano and occasional guest blogger for this site, just released a zine called Hotel Party. It’s bound to be full of all kinds of great indiscretions.

A Photo A Day

Sometimes I get emails from photographers about how I learned photography. I didn’t go to school for it, though I’ve been lucky to have a few mentors. But possibly the biggest factor in my development has been A Photo A Day. It’s a community of photographers, photojournalists, and photo students that was started by Melissa Lyttle. It operates through a Google group where members email one photo a day. People discuss the pictures or the process or the industry and everything else. I learned the vocabulary about how to talk about photos. And I learned the nuances of working as a photographer. Not to mention meeting a network of rad shooters all over the country. Although time-consuming, it was a very valuable experience. If you’re an upcoming photographer and you feel like you’re working in the dark, think about joining APAD.

Last December, Alex Welsh went to Jamaica to photograph Cameron Stallones and M. Geddes Gengras collaborating with roots reggae musicians The Congos. He made some incredible photos for the article. He even had the privilege of accompany Ashanti Roy on one of his four hour early morning walks.

Takanakuy in Video

The documentary short about Takanakuy that Danilo filmed in Peru a few months ago is live. It’s a wild festival where members of a remote Peruvian community fight one another to settle grievances that build up throughout the year. Have a watch.

Choose Your Own Chairlift

I photographed Chairlift for Intro Mag in Germany a couple months back. They were lovely and I’m psyched their new record’s a hit. I just stumbled across their latest video “Met Before”. It’s choose your own adventure style and pretty addictive. Some of the endings are so vastly different and I’m sure I haven’t gotten through all of them. I’m sure I’m seduced in part by the novelty of the video. But mostly singer Caroline Polachek. I can’t embed the video, but you can watch it here.

Soft and Wet

Sandy Kim has a solo show tomorrow (March 3rd) called Soft and Wet at Ever Gold Gallery in San Francisco. The opening is from 6pm to 10pm and the show goes through March 24th. Also Unpiano is releasing a limited edition catalog of the show that will be available tomorrow as well. If you’re anywhere in the tri-state area, make sure to stop by. It’s gonna be good.
