The most enriching part of the Stages project was watching Cai Guo-Qiang work. He’s probably the most influential Chinese artist in contemporary art. I was blown away by his retrospective “I Want to Believe” at the Guggenheim in 2008. I had no idea that two years later I’d be photographing him making one of his gunpowder drawings.

I saw this guy on Art in the 21st century! Way good!
I love that last one. Nice to see an artist enjoy his work.
i wanna see a video of that!!!
I am so intrigued. These are some of my favorite pictures of yours. They talk about the explosive semi-accidental process of making art. It’s so nice to see someone doing something totally different and you were able to capture that. Yes, is there video?
Love his work.. So excited to see you cover this!
I saw that guy at the Guggenheim too. Wright took us to see his stuff. I had never heard of him before and was blown away. That’s awesome that you got to photograph him in action. The pictures are excellent
rad, favorites are the smoke covering his face, the bright white portrait, and the last image. well done, bryan
